RE: Dodge heating up when towing

Fan clutch will normally not have any impact on temp at highway speed. The fan is there for when you are idling and don't have 60 MPH air blowing in to the grill. Think about it, with that much wind coming at it, do you really think the fan is going to make any difference? Sure it may engage if the temp is hot enough, but that is just a function of how it works, not that it's needed.
As a general rule:
High speed overheating is a flow problem such as clogged radiator, stuck thermostat or radiator/condensor clogged with bugs or crud.
Low speed overheating is a fan or fan clutch problem, sometimes thermostat.
Also, never replace the thermostat on a modern vehicle with a lower temp one. It will just confuse the computer and throw things out of wack.
then please explain to me why my fan kicks in going up hill and my temperature goes from 200 back to 180 and I am going 55 mph?
and why when I changed my thermostat from the stock 195 to 180 I got better performance?
maybe you can also explain why my Chrysler 300m came with a 180 thermostat?

RE: Differential gear ratios

My truck came with the 3.55 gears. coming up the grapevine hill from Bakersfield ca on south I-5 I would shift to second and the truck would crawl up the hill getting slower and slower sometime shifting to first. Now with the 4.10's I can leave it in third until I start to slow down and then shift to second, I even pass those 18 wheelers. With the 3.55 on flat ground I could never use overdive, now on flat ground I can use overdrive.

RE: DONT DO THIS WHEN TOWING!

Got to love it! Left the truck in reverse with the parking brake on & then asked someone who didn't know the truck to move it!
why would someone leave the truck in reverse?????

I do not believe that a F350 will pull that trailer you have in your picture. But then who am I to think!

RE: Dodge heating up when towing

My Truck ('04 Ram QC 4x4, 5-spd stick, 4.7L) does the same thing. Climbing the Alberni Hump usually garners me a CHEK GAGES warning 2 or 3 times as the temp gauge climbs past the high end mark. I've got a scan tool that I plugged into the OBDII port on our last trip, and it showed the CHEK GAGE warning at 123 Deg C. No other anomalies noted, though. Running on the flats towing I am seeing about 1/2 way between the 1/2 mark and the high mark.
On the last servicing, I had the dealer check everything. They changed the coolant, noting that the old stuff was milky and there was crud floating in the fluid. Everything else was fine (so they say). Clutch fan doesn't roar, but I do know that at idle it is moving a ton of air. One thing that I did notice on one of our trips when I had the CHEK GAGE warning and pulled over was that I could lay my hand flat against the radiator. :h:h At 123C coolant temps I should NOT be able to do that!
Anyway, I really wonder if my truck is capable of moving the 7,000lbs of trailer it is supposedly rated to move. I am starting to consider trading it in on something with a diesel under the hood. We shall see.
Cheers!
Mike
does that convert to 253 degrees fahrenheit? that is really hot. sounds like your truck is a little small.
mine only heats up to 220 on long grades but when that fan kicks in I can still be climbing and the gauge starts going down to the normal 180 degree spot.

scanner software

I have this scanner a HP model, when I scan in documents they come out at pictures. I have been looking for some software so I can get the documents scanned in as a PDF or other then a picture but am having problems with what one would be the best.
Any free software out there to do this?

RE: Dodge heating up when towing

when you are going up the hill can you hear a loud roar? you should hear a very load roar. if you do not, you might want to upgrade to the high performance fan clutch. a 180 degree thermostat will help.
